Hattiesburg, MS (Richburg Hill) embodies the location where a significant event in American Boxing History occurred over 130 years ago. Richburg, MS was the location of the last American Bare Knuckle Prizefight which took place July 8, 1889. Although prizefighting was illegal in various parts of this country, John L Sullivan and Jake Kilran fought in a winner take all 75 round World Heavyweight Championship Bare-Knuckle Contest, ending bare knuckle fighting under the London Queens rules of boxing in America.
